Website maintenance keeps the business’s published information and customer journeys usable. It combines updates, backups, access management, monitoring and content checks; a successful build is not a permanent guarantee that integrations will keep working.

Define responsibility

Record who owns hosting, domain renewals, content, application updates and third-party accounts. Clarify response times and what is outside the support agreement. A business should know whom to contact for an expired licence, failed enquiry notification or broken page without searching for the original project chat.

Update through a safe workflow

Review dependency and platform changes, test critical journeys, and keep a rollback plan. Check contact forms, protected downloads, navigation and consent settings after updates. Avoid editing production files without a record of what changed. Document account access and remove permissions when they are no longer needed.

Check content and search hygiene

Review outdated service descriptions, prices, dates and external links. Check that public pages remain indexable, metadata describes the page and the sitemap reflects current routes. Monitor mobile behaviour with real content. Maintenance should prevent a working site gradually becoming unreliable or misleading.
